Carer Respite Breaks Away
If you are a Carer of someone living with a serious mental health difficulty, you may need an occasional break from that responsibility. The Richmond Fellowship Carer Respite Program can support you by spending time with that person who relies on you so much.
For the Person you are Caring for:
Aside from our recovery workers supporting your person to engage in community and recreational activities with one on one outings around the metro area, we can offer five day breaks away for your care recipient several times throughout the year. These breaks away provide you as the Carer with time to spend on your own needs and is an excellent opportunity for the participants to get away from their usual environment, to develop their independent living skills and to enjoy being part of a social group engaged in enjoyable activities. The Program has held many of these breaks away over the 15 months and the feedback from both the participants and their Carers has been overwhelmingly positive.
For the Carers:
We will be offering a number of weekends away with a built –in education component. We have had one weekend away for Carers in February 2010 and the participants generally reported many benefits including “time out” to relax and enjoy themselves in the company of other like-minded people, along with the value of participating in the “Snapshot” training for mental health Carers.
Who can apply:
The person you care for may be dealing with any kinds of mental health difficulty including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders and post traumatic stress disorder. To be eligible for the service, you must have lieved as a carer for a least the past six months, but:
-
You do not have to be living in the same home as the person you care for
-
You do not need to be living on a Carer's Allowance
-
The person you are caring for does not require a FORMAL diagonosis.
Please note, there will possibly be capacity for Richmond Fellowship to run more breaks away for men and women towards the end of 2010 and the need will be determined by demand for the service.
Also, we will be seeking out other suitable venues, hence the designated venue may change.
